Our Juice Fast in Detail:

So many of our friends have asked for the details of our 5-day Juice Fast, so we thought that we would just put it all out there.

First, we began by clearing out the refrigerator – getting rid (eating) all of the left-overs and anything that might just go bad in the next 5 days.  This way too, there was no temptations – if it ain’t there, you can’t eat it!

Then the day before our fast we went shopping for everything we would need – one stop shopping at our favorite little spot in Findlay Market.  We purchased as much organic as possible – this was about 90% of all the fruits and veggies we bought. The rest were from local farmers– who are using organic means but aren’t officially “organic”.

In addition to the Fruits and Veggies, you will need Psyllium Husks Powder and a Probiotic.  The Psyllium Powder will keep things moving in your digestive system and gently cleanse the walls of your colon. The Probiotic makes sure that you continue to hold onto those Good bacteria in your digestive track.   A pinch of Pink Himalayan Sea Salt in a one or two of your glasses of water each day will help add extra Minerals you may need.

Remember these are all fresh juices, nothing canned or bottled. Canned and bottled usually have added sugars.

Ready?  Here we go!

Day 1:   Begin the day with 1 Probiotic and 1 – 12oz glass of water with a rounded teaspoon of the Psyllium Powder.   Drink 5 2-cup glasses of Fruit/Veggie Juice every 3 hours.  We began around 7am each day so our schedule was: 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm and the 7pm.  Drink as much water as you can (add a slice of lemon to the water to help keep your body’s PH balance in check).  We drank about 100 oz. of water each day.

Just before bed, take another Probiotic and drink another rounded teaspoon of Psyllium Powder with 12 oz. of water.  *We mixed our Psyllium Powder in a shaker cup – be sure to drink it as quickly as possible because it thickens the longer it sits – that’s what its supposed to do.

Day 2 & Day 3 – EXACTLY like Day 1.

Day 4 – Begin your day with the 1 Probiotic and 1 – 12oz glass of water with a rounded teaspoon of the Psyllium Powder.   Today you get to add in 4 Egg Whites – we made a simple omelet with just a hint of Lemon Pepper.  Eat the 4 Egg Whites for breakfast and then again at dinner – 8 eggs total for the day.    ONLY drink 4 2-cup servings of fresh Juice.   (The eggs replace one of the Juice servings.)

Just before bed, take another Probiotic and drink another rounded teaspoon of Psyllium Powder with 12 oz. of water

Day 5 –  Day 5 is just like Day 4 but now you will begin to add just a little more ‘solid’ food back into your diet.  So, at dinner time add in one 6/8 oz. baked chicken breast or piece of baked fish – continue with the egg whites as well.  Be sure to also continue the Probiotic and Psyllium Powder both morning and evening.

That’s it…you’re done!

Now, we are coffee drinkers. And since the cleanse is just a five day one, we didn’t want to have to deal with the massive headache that we knew would come upon us by giving up our coffee.  So, each morning we allowed ourselves to have ONE cup of coffee – just enough to keep the headache at bay.

There really isn’t a list of recipes to use for your Juices – experiment and have fun!  We stocked our refrigerator with: Lemons, Apples, Cucumbers, Asparagus, Cauliflower, Celery, Carrots, Red Beets, Swiss Chard, Watercress, Broccoli,  Bok Choy, Strawberries, Ginger, Cilantro, Spinach, Kale, Pineapple and Cantaloupe.  Really, whatever you like!  We would mix and match these and came up with some beautiful and tasty drinks!   On the 4th and 5tn days we actually  took one of our drinks (making it a little less than 2 cups) then placed it in our blender with a little ice and a full Banana and made a smoothie. We did it this way because we like bananas and they just don’t juice.

Things to know: Broccoli flowers and Cantaloupe can really clog up your filter on the Juicer – so do these almost last.  Be sure to juice your ‘soft’ item followed by something ‘hard’ – for instance, juice the cilantro then follow it with a cucumber – the firmness of the cucumber will push the softness of the Cilantro more thoroughly through the filter – this makes sure you get everything out of each item you Juice.  We liked to add an Apple to almost every Juice blend we came up with, they add a nice sweetness to the drink.  I also, for no good reason, like to finish each Juice with a lemon.
